Traditional Suzhou Embroidery is a reproduction of existing artistic works; in other words, reproduction from a copy. This kind of “Suzhou Embroidery making” not only lacks originality and variety, but also tends to cause copyright disputes. In order to enrich the copyright inventory of Zhenhu embroidery and offer the embroiderers more options in producing embroidery, Mr. Fang Xiangjun and Mr. Xie Shiqiang, teachers from Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute, recently gave the Suzhou Embroidery Copyright Trading Service Platform more than 100 pieces of their works of art for free. According to the agreement, the works of art of these two teachers would be used in embroidery for production, sales, packing, trademark and advertising. Teachers from the Institute will continue to cooperate with the embroiderers from Zhenhu in different kinds concerning the copyrights of their works of art so as to help with the creation of Suzhou Embroidery and the construction of the Suzhou Embroidery Copyright Trading Service Platform.
Mr. Qin Huaiyu, a teacher from Suzhou Art and Design Technology Institute, acting as vice secretary of party committee of Zhenhu Subdistrict, said that Suzhou Embroidery Copyright Trading Service Platform was established as a market-oriented platform with incentives to encourage innovations by the embroiderers in embroidery themes and to bring about the “self-sufficiency” system.
Once the embroiderers have created their themes, they will be encouraged to apply for copyright of their creation to prevent plagiarism. So far, nearly 200 pieces of original embroidery have been copyrighted successfully.
